I am sad to inform you of the death of Dr Paul Friedman on July 2, 2017 in San Diego. Paul was a leader in chest radiology, and a pioneer in radiologic-pathologic correlation, having begun his career under the mentorship of Dr Averill Liebow. He was a faculty member in the Department of Radiology at UC San Diego for almost fifty years.
Paul was a long-standing and loyal Fleischner member, was President of the Society in 1994, and participated in several White Papers. Until quite recently, he was an active and engaged investigator in the COPDGene study.
I will remember him for his focus on scientific precision and clarity of language. He was invariably supportive, kind and gentle in his comments, but always had a clear and well-articulated opinion which was worth paying attention to. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman. He is survived by his wife Clare, children Elizabeth, Deborah, Matthew, and Rachel, and nine grandchildren.
Below is a link to his obituary, where you may leave condolences, and where you may read a more detailed biography by his daughter Elizabeth.
